100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities: Prepare for the call for expression of interest!

The targets of the European Green Deal – reducing emissions by 55% by 2030 and becoming the first climate-neutral continent by 2050 – will be impossible to achieve without cities in the vanguard of concerted efforts.

And many European cities are already doing fantastic work towards climate neutrality. A number of cities have made commitments to reduce Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. Yet only a handful of cities have so far adopted a target of climate neutrality by 2030.

EU Missions articleThe Mission on Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities (the “Cities Mission”) will mobilise local authorities, citizens, businesses, investors as well as regional and national authorities to achieve two objectives:
    1) Deliver at least 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030,
    2) Ensure that these cities act as experimentation and innovation hubs to enable all European cities to follow suit by 2050.

    [EDIT 26 November]

On 25 November the Commission launched a call for expression of interest addressed to cities to join the European Mission on Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities.

Cities participating in the mission will prepare and implement a “Climate City Contract” that will be co-created with local stakeholders and citizens. Learn more on the call for interest!
